From 1949 until 2002 the German currency was called Mark or Deutsche Mark. One Mark was made up of 100 Pfennige. So Mark corresponds to the Euro today. Pfennige corresponds to cents today. At the time, when the Mark was changed to Euros, the exchange rate was very nearly 2 Marks for one Euro. Likewise, you got one cent for two Pfennige.
