Die Höhenenergie des aufgestauten Wassers wird von Düsen in Bewegungsenergie umwandelt: die Wassertrahlen dienen hier nur experimentellen Zwecken. Üblicherweise wird das Wasser über Turbinen abgelassen, worüber dann elektrische Energie erzeugt wird. Das Kraftwerk an dieser Staumauer kann rund 1296 MW elektrische Leistung erzeugen, das entspricht in etwa einem Atomkraftwerk wie Biblis in Deutschland.

Die Glen-Canyon-Staumauer (Glen Canyon Dam) ist eine Talsperre, die den Colorado River in Arizona anstaut. Der dadurch aufgestaute See ist der Lake Powell,
