  • Sonar technicians aboard the nuclear submarine USS Toledo (SSN 769) monitor the sonar screens during their watch while underway in the Persian Gulf on Sept. 1, 2004. Underway sonar is the eyes and ears of the submarine. A submarine uses sonar in developing ranges and building contact solutions. Sonar also continuously monitors and tracks changes in the ocean's environment such as biologic activity, ambient noise levels and shipping levels. Toledo is part of the USS John F. Kennedy (CV 67) Strike Group and is on a routine six-month deployment. DoD photo by Petty Officer 1st class David C. Lloyd, U.S. Navy. (Released) 040901-N-1348L-002
