Das Metzler Physik Lehrbuch definiert Modelle als „auf einen Bereich beschränkte Vorstellungshilfen, sie sind Wirklichkeitskonstruktionen, die eine Theorie exakt erfüllen. Diese Wirklichkeitskonstruktionen sind aber nicht die Wirklichkeit selbst[1].“ Ein extremes Beispiel für die Kluft zwischen Modell und Wirklichkeit bietet die Quantenphysik[2].
